PL2303GC allows an OEM to program a customized, descriptive Product String and a Specified COM Port number into OTPROM / EEPROM during manufacturing. Instead of presenting several identical generic COM-port names, Windows Device Manager can present product-specific names that make each serial device easier to identify at a glance. The product identity is provisioned at the device side before shipment, allowing the configured identity to travel with the product and reducing routine end-user COM reassignment or manual Device Manager setup.

When multiple USB-to-UART devices use the same generic description, users may see several nearly identical entries and must remember which COM number belongs to which product. PL2303GC lets the OEM program a descriptive multilingual Product String together with a Specified COM Port number, so each device can be identified by purpose at a glance.
